To quote directly from the newspaper report; ‘The news of the sad death of Lieut.-Quartermaster Sidney Fielding at Plymouth will be received with deep regret by many friends in Derby, where his home was. The deceased was attached to the 3rd Battalion Notts & Derbyshire Regiment, and on Wednesday he was found shot in the head with a revolver by his side at Crownhill Barracks. He recovered consciousness while in hospital, but made no reference to the tragic affair. At the inquest his brother stated that he was of a singularly happy disposition. The jury returned a verdict of ‘suicide during temporary insanity.’’
